why hydraulic cylinder seals fail?

1. Contamination

Contamination is arguably the leading cause of seal failure. Dust, dirt, moisture, and other abrasive particles can enter the hydraulic system through worn wipers or damaged rods, leading to premature wear of seals and cylinder components. Internal contamination from degraded hydraulic fluid or component wear can also be detrimental.

2. Improper Installation

Incorrect installation is a frequent culprit. Seals can be twisted, cut, or improperly seated during assembly, leading to immediate or rapid failure. Using the wrong tools or insufficient lubrication during installation can also cause damage.

3. Material Degradation

Over time, seal materials can degrade due to exposure to high temperatures, incompatible hydraulic fluids, or chemical attack. This degradation can lead to hardening, cracking, or softening of the seals, compromising their sealing integrity.

4. Operating Conditions

Extreme operating conditions, such as excessive pressure, high speeds, side loads, or rapid temperature fluctuations, can stress seals beyond their design limits, accelerating wear and leading to failure.

5. Wear and Tear

Like any mechanical component, seals are subject to natural wear and tear. However, factors like poor surface finish of the rod or bore, misalignment, or inadequate lubrication can significantly accelerate this process.
